If Pookie’s Place had a Swiss Army knife, it would be Brooke. Need a cat picked up two hours away? Brooke’s driving. Vet appointment during business hours when everyone else is at work? Brooke’s there. A potential partner wants to talk logistics, funding, or “how does this whole foster thing even work?” Brooke’s the one …
Pookie's Place
Who are we?
Pookie’s Place Cat Rescue and Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 41-4281706) born from grief, love, and a promise. We rescue, heal, and rehome cats who have nowhere else to go and we never stop fighting for the ones who need us most.
About Us
Find out who we are and what we do

Our Organization
It started with one kitten.
In May 2024, a tiny black kitten was found living in a cat colony on the streets of Killeen, TX. He always sat apart from the others — small, alone, and clearly struggling. In August 2024, we brought him home and named him Ghost.
Even off the streets, Ghost stayed tiny. After three months in our care, he still wasn’t growing the way he should have. Bloodwork finally gave us an answer: Ghost was sick. We gave him every bit of medical care we could find, fought for him with everything we had, and loved him fiercely for as long as we got to keep him. In February 2025, we lost him.
That loss became a promise: no cat would face that fight alone again, not on our watch. By December 2024, that promise already had us pulling more cats off the streets and out of bad situations — and in February 2026, it became official when Pookie’s Place registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
We’re a small, foster-based rescue. We don’t have a shelter building — we have a network of homes, including our own, where cats can heal, decompress, and wait for the right family to find them. What we lack in a facility, we make up for in commitment: we take in cats other rescues can’t or won’t, we cover veterinary costs families can’t afford, and we sit with the hard cases because we know firsthand what it means to fight for a life worth saving.
So far, that promise has meant:
- We have cats placed in loving, permanent homes
- 40 cats spayed or neutered, helping break the cycle that leaves so many cats living on the streets like Ghost once did
- Every cat in our care getting the veterinary attention, safety, and time they need to heal
Ghost didn’t get his miracle. But because of him, twenty cats after him have — and we’re just getting started.
Meet The Team
Sarah founded Pookie’s Place in honor of her brother, John “Pookie.” After losing a kitten named Ghost, it made her determined to help cats no one else would. A lifelong animal lover raised on a ranch, she now leads a foster-based rescue serving Central Texas and believes every cat deserves a soft place to land.
As our Relations Coordinator, he’s the one out there building bridges: striking up partnerships, spreading the word about who we are, and making the connections that let this rescue do more than it ever could alone.
Aimee pours her heart into matching our cats and kittens with the perfect families, making sure every adoption is a good fit that lasts a lifetime. From answering questions to coordinating meet-and-greets to celebrating every “gotcha day,” she’s the reason so many of our kitties get their happy ending.

What People Say
Exceptional Organization!
We adopted our sweet boy, Bear, from Pookie's Place and it was honestly the easiest, most heartfelt adoption experience we've had. Sarah and the team were so transparent about his personality, his health, and what to expect — nothing was rushed. You can tell this rescue isn't just about placing cats, it's about making sure every cat lands somewhere he'll be loved for life. Seamus has been part of our family for months now and we can't imagine our home without him.

They Do Great Things!
I started donating to Pookie's Place after following Oliver's story and seeing how much this small but mighty rescue does with so little. Every dollar clearly goes straight to the cats — vet bills, food, care — and the updates they share are honest, heartfelt, and never sugarcoated. Knowing Pookie's Place exists in Central Texas gives me real hope for the cats who'd otherwise have nowhere to turn.

I’m happy to be a part of this!
I've worked alongside Sarah and Pookie's Place on transports and vet visits, and their dedication is unmatched. This is a rescue built entirely on heart — no shelter, no big budget, just a network of people who refuse to let cats fall through the cracks. Central Texas is lucky to have them, and I'm proud to help however I can.

Amazing team!
Fostering for Pookie's Place has been one of the most rewarding things I've done. They provide everything you need — supplies, vet coordination, guidance — so you can just focus on giving a scared or sick kitten the safe, loving environment they need to heal. What sets this rescue apart is how much they care about their fosters, not just the cats. I always feel supported, never alone in the hard moments.
