Every Cat Needs a Village

Pookie’s Place Cat Rescue and Sanctuary doesn’t have a shelter building — we have something better: a network of caring people who open their homes, their time, and their hearts to cats who need us. As a foster-based rescue serving Central Texas, our volunteers are our rescue. Without you, there is no us.

Whether you have room for a foster kitten, an hour a week for social media, or a truck for transport runs, there’s a place for you here.

Why Volunteer With PPCRS

• See the impact firsthand. You’ll watch scared, sick, or overlooked cats become healthy, confident, and ready for a home — because of you.
• Flexible commitment. Foster-based rescue works around real life. We have roles for a few hours a month and roles for the deeply devoted.
• A real community. You’ll join a network of fellow cat people who understand the joy (and the 2 a.m. kitten feedings).
• No experience necessary. We provide training, support, and a community of experienced fosters and volunteers to lean on.

Ways to Volunteer

Foster a Cat or Kitten

Our most critical need. Foster homes give cats a safe, loving environment to heal, grow, and become adoptable — outside the stress of a shelter.

• Bottle-baby and nursing mama fosters
• Kitten fosters (weaned, pre-adoption)
• Adult and senior cat fosters
• Medical or hospice fosters for cats needing extra care
• Sanctuary fosters for cats who aren’t a fit for adoption but deserve a soft place to land

PPCRS covers food, litter, and veterinary care through our partner clinic — you provide the love and the couch.

Transport

Help get cats to and from vet appointments, foster homes, and adoption events. Perfect for volunteers who want to help but can’t foster.

Vet & Medical Support

Assist with vet drop-offs/pick-ups, medication schedules, or post-surgical care coordination. Veterinary or vet-tech experience is a plus but not required.

Social Media & Marketing

Help tell our cats’ stories. We’re always looking for volunteers who can write adoption bios, take photos, manage our Facebook and Instagram, or design graphics for fundraisers and events.

Events & Adoption Days

Set up, staff, and break down adoption events and community fundraisers. Great for volunteers who love meeting people as much as cats.

Administrative & Behind-the-Scenes

Not everyone wants to hold a kitten (that’s okay!). We need help with:

• Data entry and records management
• Grant writing and research
• Donor communication
• Foster application review and onboarding

Sanctuary Care

Support our long-term sanctuary cats — cats who, due to age, medical needs, or temperament, will live out their lives in permanent foster care. This role involves ongoing enrichment, monitoring, and companionship.

Handy Helpers

Build cat trees, repair foster supplies, or help transport donated equipment. If you’re crafty or handy with tools, we can use you.

What We Ask of Our Volunteers

• You’re 18 or older (or volunteering alongside a parent/guardian)
• You can commit to reliable communication — we’re a small team and depend on each other
• You’re willing to complete a short volunteer or foster application
• You care about the mission: no cat left behind

How to Get Started

1. Fill out our Volunteer Interest Form HERE — tell us a little about yourself and what role interests you.
2. Hear back from our team — we’ll follow up to talk through fit, expectations, and next steps.
3. Get oriented — foster volunteers receive our Foster Care Manual and a walkthrough of supplies, vet procedures, and support resources.
4. Start making a difference — welcome to the PPCRS family!

Foster FAQs

Do I need a separate room for fostering? It helps, especially for kittens or cats being introduced to a new home, but it’s not required for every placement. We’ll match you with a foster that fits your space.

Who pays for food, litter, and vet care? PPCRS covers all essential costs through our partner clinic, Liberty Hill Animal Hospital. You provide the time, space, and love.

How long do I foster for? It varies — from a couple weeks for a healing kitten to several months for a shy adult cat. We’ll always be upfront about the expected timeline.

What if I fall in love and want to adopt? It happens all the time — we call it a “foster fail,” and we celebrate every one.
